Crossway Academy is a unique place that provides a therapeutic environment that increases a student’s ability to learn. Our small class sizes create more opportunities for more individualized and differentiated instruction.
As Crossway continues to expand and service children with diverse needs and abilities, we have always recognized the need to teach and support the WHOLE child. Part of that support comes from our occupational, physical and speech therapists who facilitate student development of handwriting, social-emotional regulation, fine motor skills, motor planning and self-care. Additionally, our students receive music therapy, Allegro Movement Therapy and extracurricular activities such as Soccer Shots.
We are taking things a step further and creating a functional curriculum that targets the following domains:
Our founder and teachers work diligently in updating this curriculum. Your students' needs are at the center of our preparations, which promises a curriculum that is individualized.

As a practitioner, Shelley Dean, OTD, OTR/L recognized a need for more pediatric therapy services in the Charlotte area. In 2004, Shelley opened Crossway Pediatric Therapy as a sole provider. Shelley chose the name “Crossway” to demonstrate the journey made by families and children with special needs. The image of the bridge symbolizes the child’s path which ultimately leads to their dreams and independence if provided with the appropriate supports. Through this vision, Shelley has expanded her services from a sole provider to a multidisciplinary team with an office of nearly 10,000 square feet of therapeutic space. Through the support and dedication of the therapists and specialists, Crossway Pediatric Therapy continues to grow to meet the demands of the Charlotte area—most recently this growth included the opening of Crossway Academy and Crossway Middle School. Shelley opened Crossway Academy in 2011 with Dorian Ladue , M. Ed. to fulfill the need in the community of special needs children. The team at Crossway believes in using multidisciplinary and educational approaches to facilitate the desired goals for each child and their supporting family.
